Weight Loss Clinic

Here at the Edgbaston Medical Practice, we believe that the best way to healthy weight loss is through a balanced diet and an exercise regime to suit your needs. Fad diets may be the answer short term, but with a steady, healthy life style, weight loss can be a long term achievement.

Our Doctors are available to give you an individual weight management plan that is tailor made to suit your exact needs and requirements. The doctor will eliminate any possible medical reason for weight gain, before starting your weight management programme. The program will help you to experience a healthy relationship with food and incorporating an exercise regime to suit your body type that will slowly but permanently eliminate your body issues.

Patients on a Weight management plan will have regular meetings with the practitioner, where your progress will be monitored and assessed on a regular basis to ensure the regime is right for you. Changes and alteration may be made to the plan to ensure the best possible results. Our practitioners are on standby for both physical and emotional support of their patients.

We aim to offer:

  • Look for any potential medical reasons for your weight loss/gain
  • Advice
  • A Fitness regime that you will benefit from
  • A food plan that is right for you
  • Support with cravings and motivation

In addition to the above, the practice can offer medical help with weight loss as well as refer to local specialists for possible surgical intervention.

Obesity

The increased consumption of foods rich in saturated fat and processed sugar have been largely to blame for the ballooning waistline of our nation, in addition to large portion sizes and the adoption of a sedentary lifestyle. Obesity is a growing problem in the UK with 66.8% of adults and 31.1% of children classified as either overweight or obese in 2007. Of this, 24% of adults and 16.8% of children were classed as obese. This figure has been set to rise over the coming years and is a key factor resulting in premature death and morbidity.

Obesity is a growing concern for our Doctors due to the health risks associated with obesity. These include: Type II Diabetes Mellitus, Coronary Heart Disease (CHD), high blood pressure, sleep apnoea, arthritis and infertility in women to name but a few. Furthermore, the effects of obesity are not solely restricted to the effects on physical health, but can also affect your mental and emotional health. Stress, anxiety, depression and low self esteem are common side effects of obesity.

Here at the Edgbaston Medical Practice we aim to help you reassess your food choices and encourage a progressive exercise regime to help you achieve a healthy weight. This will not only reduce your chance of developing the health risks associated with obesity but will improve self confidence and encourage you to develop a healthy relationship with food through counselling sessions with our trained practitioners. Therefore, we will not only help you to increase your life span but will help improve your quality of life.

Steady Weight Loss

As a consequence of steady weight loss you will undoubtedly decrease the likelihood of developing the health risks associated with obesity, as with steady weight loss comes a decrease in blood pressure, a gradual reduction in blood cholesterol and a decrease in the chances of developing diabetes. The combination of these factors results in a reduction in the Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) risk score, reducing your probability of suffering from a heart attack or even coronary death. Furthermore, the regime will become integrated into your current lifestyle and weight loss will become a long term achievement. In addition, you should find you feel less fatigued and have more energy throughout the day and are able to easily complete tasks that would have otherwise been strenuous.

A quick fix is not the solution to long term weight loss and has side effects that you are not always made aware of. Rapid weight loss can cause the development of gall stone through rapid movement of fat and can cause painful obstruction of the bile ducts and can also result in inflammation of the liver, pancreas and bladder. Furthermore, rapid weight loss can result in loss of muscle mass, cause dehydration, hair loss and unsightly loose skin.

At the Edgbaston Medical Practice we promote a steady weight loss program where you can reap the benefits of a change towards a healthy lifestyle without the side effects of rapid weight loss.

Our Approach

Our approach to weight loss is one where we aim to help you achieve long term, sustainable weight loss through the use of a personalised healthy eating plan, address current eating habits, encourage exercise with integration of the changes to your current lifestyle. Furthermore we will consult with fully qualified nutritionists and dieticians to ensure you are getting all your essential vitamins, minerals and nutrients.

At our practice we set realistic weight loss goals and we will help you to understand the underlying cause of overeating through sessions with our trained counsellors. In addition, you can arrange regular meetings with our counsellors and motivation coaches to ensure you remain enthused and continue with the weight loss plan to achieve a healthy weight.

At the Edgbaston Medical Practice our medical practitioners are able to prescribe dietary aids to support weight loss or refer for gastric surgery, however this is based on an individual case basis to determine suitability as your health and wellbeing is of the upmost importance.

Exercise

Exercise is an essential part of any healthy lifestyle and is a vital component of any weight loss program. Exercise will not only help you to lose weight by burning excess calories stored as fat but will improve fitness, strengthen heart muscle and lung tissue, increase stamina and increase energy levels whilst combating fatigue and lethargy.

Get Moving

By increasing your low intensity activity levels by a small amount everyday to 30 – 60 minutes in addition to aerobic exercise 3-4 times per week you could boost your weight loss. Small tasks such as taking the stairs instead of the lift or escalator, going for a brisk walk on your lunch break, taking the children out for a walk in the park, vacuuming or even pacing whilst on the phone at either home or at work will increase your activity levels without spending hours in the gym and will soon become a part of your daily routine and help you to maintain your weight loss.

Aerobic Exercise

Aerobic exercise or cardio is an excellent way to increase your heart rate, strengthen the heart and lungs and is an excellent way to burn excess energy and decrease weight. Running and spinning classes are excellent forms of aerobic exercise. However to remain enthused and enjoy exercise why not try dancing classes with a partner of friend, join a boxing class, go on nature treks and hikes or play tennis or football with friends. The key is to choose an exercise program that you enjoy and if exercise becomes fun and is no longer merely a chore you will find it becomes a part of your lifestyle and is something to look forward to.
